Our family has a tradition. The four of us, along with Sheri's
parents, Ed and Betty Lou, and her brother, Curtis, and
his wife, Kim (see http://www.curtisandkim.com), all go
on a vacation together in the winter. This year we went
to San Antonio, TX, and LOVED it. What a beautiful city!
We had plenty to do and enjoy, the city was clean, people
were friendly, and we could never run out of fantastic Mexican
restaurants to visit, even if we stayed for months! The
Riverwalk was especially beautiful. But there's just one
problem. We are operating under something we've come to
know as the Sheri Curse. Now, we're not superstitious people.
We don't believe in curses and voodoo and stuff like that.
But we can't help but notice that every time Sheri travels
to a warm location, it turns cold or inclement in some other
way. We pick places that SHOULD allow us to thaw out a little
during the Pennsylvania winter. So, there was the time we
went to Los Angeles, and found ice on our car in the morning!
Ice in LA! Or the time we enjoyed whale watching in San
Diego in our fleece and winter coats, hats, and gloves!
And this was no different. 40s everyday but one, where we
enjoyed a comfortable 65 degrees.
It's funny how whenever we show up anywhere people apologize
for the weather. "I'm so sorry...it's not usually like
this!" "That's okay," we reply. "It's
not your fault!" It's our fault, we think to ourselves.
And it's not just during the winter, either. Let's not forget
Sheri's and my wedding day...in a hurricane! Or the time
we got our legs sand blasted on the beach in Ocean City,
NJ, during high winds! Or how about the only time in recorded
history that it snowed in Ruskin, FL? You guessed it, Sheri
and her family were driving in. Or when we took a long weekend
getaway to Virginia Beach over President's Day weekend...and
had to stay an extra day because of the blizzard of the
century! We came home to 24 inches of snow. When we could
get home, that is. People in Buffalo may scoff, but for
central PA, that's a lot.
So, what's my recommendation? If you hear the Sandstroms
are coming to your town, it might be a good time for a vacation!
But send a dozen or so people to my concert first, of course!
;-)
